It’s the kind of class that can’t be dismissed" "But you don’t have to be a scholar to matriculate at the lounge with an art-inspired craft cocktail, or at the courtyard for a brunch of chicken and white-cheddar crepes, or at the inn’s farm-to-table restaurant, Hamilton's Kitchen, for veal osso buco or black garlic risotto."
#5 OBERLIN: The Hotel at Oberlin, Oberlin, OH
"A stone’s throw from Oberlin College, this boutique hotel is among five in the country meeting the United States Green Building Council LEED Platinum standard. Most notably, it uses radiant heating and cooling to keep guests comfortable. Instead of circulating hot or cold air, surfaces within the space are adjusted with infrared energy. To keep things from feeling too slick, the building features salvaged wood furnishings built by area Mennonite and Amish carpenters."

"Some of the details were conceived by Smart Hotels and by the Olympia Companies, which Oberlin hired to advise on technical services and to manage the hotel. But they help tell the Oberlin story, which he said was a major reason for building the hotel.
“One of the objectives we had going into this was communicating Oberlin’s core values,” said Dr. Frandsen, who put the cost of the mixed-use project that includes the hotel as well as new retail and office space at $35 million. “So if we didn’t pick out the soap dishes and the picture frames, we did make a conscious decision to work with people who understood that sustainability is something we value here at Oberlin, and a big part of our story.”

The awards are the result of the Travel + Leisure annual reader’s poll. The prestigious endorsement from the magazine’s well-traveled, discriminating readers establishes The Alfond Inn’s ranking among the top echelon of hotels in the United States and confirms what has set the hotel apart since opening three years ago this month – the growing preference among travelers for small, stylish boutique hotel experiences, the antithesis of cookie-cutter lodging experiences. In the case of The Alfond Inn, the distinction comes from being one of the most committed art hotels in the U.S., a strong emphasis on service and a mission that’s firmly rooted in philanthropy. All of this from a boutique hotel owned by Rollins College, located in the charming and historic town of Winter Park, Florida.

Two weeks ago I had the honor of receiving the award for best Hospitality / Residential Project from ENR Midwest on behalf of the Hyatt Place Chicago South University / Medical Center. It was a rare treat to get together with the project architect, April Maifield from Legat Architects, and our general contractor, Eric Handley from W A Randolph Construction. These two firms were instrumental to the success of this project. Using an integrated project delivery system that engaged the general contractor during the design phase allowed us to brainstorm practical, cost-effective solutions for many of the project challenges. This was particularly important as the hotel was being developed as part of the Harper Court Development, located on top of an underground parking garage that was being built by another developer. As an example, we were able to switch structural systems from poured in place concrete to light gauge metal stud during the schematic phase, saving over $1 million in project costs and 1 month in project schedule.

Custom Development Solutions
The Olympia Companies creates innovative solutions for projects in potentially challenging markets. In 2013 they opened three completely different properties that were developed to blend with the local environment and address specific business requirements. These included The Alfond Inn, an upscale boutique hotel in Winter Park, Florida that is owned by Rollins College, a renowned liberal arts college. The Olympia Companies also developed Hyatt Place Chicago- South/University Medical Center on the city's south side as part of a large-scale urban renewal project that needed to meet strict Minority Business Enterprise and Women's Business Enterprise targets. The year also saw the opening of a Hilton Garden Inn in Durham, North Carolina that served to initiate additional 9th Street corridor development near the Duke University Medical Center.
A singular feature of The Olympia Companies is its studious approach to both developing and managing hotels in college towns. The company has worked directly with Rollins College, Oberlin College, Swarthmore College and The University of Chicago. They've also completed considerable work in college towns. These locations include properties in Durham, North Carolina (Duke University); Brunswick, Maine (Bowdoin College); Durham, New Hampshire (University of New Hampshire); and Charlottesville, Virginia (University of Virginia). These hotels serve both the college and the surrounding community, with each project catering to various stakeholders.
A "town & gown" situation requires a subtle and nuanced approach, which is what The Olympia Companies did when they recently partnered with Smart Hotels, LLC to develop the 131-room Hyatt Place Chicago- South/ University Medical Center in Hyde Park, on the south side of Chicago. Closely affiliated with the University of Chicago, the hotel opened in September 2013 as part of the Harper Court Development, a multi-use LEED Gold development which includes retail, commercial, and residential elements. It is the first new hotel in the Hyde Park neighborhood in more than half a century, and brought much-needed employment to the area. More than 80% of the hires were local residents who were trained by The Olympia Companies.
The Olympia Companies have established themselves as leaders in green hospitality and sustainability, signature elements in the portfolio of hotel projects, and a mandate that is at the heart of their corporate culture. The shining example of their green building is the groundbreaking Inn by the Sea in Cape Elizabeth, Maine, a luxury beach resort and the state's only Virtuoso property. The hotel has dramatic Atlantic views and the white sand waterfront of Crescent Beach. Yet it also has one of the "greenest" resumes in New England, with Maine DEP Green Lodging and a Spa with Silver LEED® certifications. Inn by the Sea has been lauded as one of TripAdvisor's Top 10 Environmentally-Friendly Accommodations and a Top 10 American Green Hotel by MSNBC.
Innovation, tailor-made solutions and creativity as equity partners, hotel developers and hotel management make The Olympia Companies one of the most respected and sought after partners for new projects across the country.
